Day of Discovery: APU Unveils the World of Cyber Security to SMK St. Dominic Students

Students from SMK St. Dominic were introduced to the world of cyber security and digital forensics through lessons on capture the flag (CTF) and scenario-based games, enhancing their learning experience by making it more enjoyable, interactive, and thrilling as they delve into the digital realm for the Next Gen.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) St. Dominic, Lahad Datu, Sabah, recently embarked on a thrilling mission to Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) with an objective to conquer the captivating realm of Cyber Security and Digital Forensics!

During their visit, they took a closer look at the APU’s Cyber Security Talent Zone (CSTZ), which includes a fully functioning Security Operations Centre (SOC) that allows students to gain hands-on cybersecurity operations experience.

Through an engaging Capture the Flag (CTF) presentation, students were thrust into the heart of digital defence. This dynamic event showcased APU’s cutting-edge cybersecurity programme, proving their commitment to training the next generation of cyber warriors.

Interactive demonstrations and insightful discussions ignited the students’ curiosity, turning them from bystanders into budding cybersecurity defenders, and inspiring the students to explore and protect the ever-evolving digital landscape.

Unlocking the Digital Vault

The mission continued with a workshop on Digital Forensics. Here, SMK St. Dominic (secondary school) students were equipped to tackle the digital crime scene.

A combination of theory and hands-on activities allowed them to delve into the fascinating world of digital forensics. They learned how to investigate digital crimes and incidents, like a true cyber sleuth.

The workshop kicked off with a deep dive understanding the importance of digital evidence, the investigation process, and the tools used to uncover hidden clues.

Students discovered the different types of digital evidence, from social media posts to network traffic, and how these can be used to solve real-world cases.

Scenario-Based Digital Forensic Game

But theory is only half the battle. Students then put their skills to the test in a thrilling scenario-based digital forensic game, Murder Case Scenario CTF competition.

Imagine a data breach or cyberattack — the students, working in teams, needed to use their critical thinking and teamwork to solve the case and identify the culprit.

Over two action-packed hours, they analysed data, examined digital devices, and pieced together clues like true digital detectives.

With guidance from expert mentors Ms Nor Azlina Abd. Rahman and Ms Noris Ismail they navigated the complexities of evidence collection, analysis, and reporting.

“This workshop was not just informative, it was immersive,” said one of the students who take part in this visit and added that “All students left with a comprehensive understanding of cybersecurity and digital forensics and its role in combating cybercrime. We saw first-hand how this critical field protects our digital world.”

The workshop sparked a passion for digital forensics in these future cybersecurity heroes. By igniting their curiosity and providing hands-on experience, APU is building a future generation equipped to defend the digital frontier!
